Reid A. Aronson

Reid Aronson is a Partner at Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan LLP, which he joined and where he has exclusively practiced matrimonial law, with a focus on high-net worth equitable distribution cases, since 2015. Prior to joining AM&S, Reid specialized in complex commercial litigation, including mortgage-backed securities putback litigation, at the prestigious national law firms Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and Jenner & Block, with clients including the world’s largest financial institutions, to government regulators, to individuals facing prosecution.

While his education and experience serve him well when he is called upon to analyze the finances of families and large business enterprises, he also has the background to be sensitive to the unique problems and challenges that confront family lawyers. At the University of Chicago, in addition to Economics, Reid majored in Theatre Arts. During his senior year, he served as the Committee Chair of the U of C’s well-respected University Theatre program. Reid continues to pursue his passion of theatre by serving on the board of directors of Arc Stages, a Westchester-based non-profit educational and regional theatre group, and occasionally appearing as an actor in Arc’s stage productions.

That background serves him well in his professional life as a litigator, both in formulating and presenting his client’s positions when standing before a judge and when drafting briefs. Among his proudest professional accomplishments, Reid co-authored the amicus brief in the US Supreme Court police brutality case Tolan v. Cotton, 134 S. Ct. 1861 (2014), where the Court summarily reversed a lower court decision dismissing the claims of a police shooting survivor against the officer who shot him. Justice Sotomayor’s opinion, which closely mirrored the arguments made by Reid and his co-authors, garnered voluminous media attention and has been cited in hundreds of reported decisions since. Reid brings that same ingenuity, reasoning, and emotional sensitivity to every case he handles, which is why he has been named among New York’s Best Lawyers and Superlawyers multiple times.

When not representing clients, Reid is deeply involved in Manhattan politics, in particular judicial politics, having served since 2025 as the judiciary committee chair of the Lexington Democratic Club, New York City’s oldest reform Democratic organization; and since 2023 as a delegate to the New York County Democratic Party Judicial Convention, which selects the party’s nominees to the New York State Supreme Court.

Reid lives in New York City with his wife, Vanessa, and their two sons.
